Portland L.L. Bean store to close

L.L. Bean announced it will close its outlet store on Congress Street, Portland, next year.

Carolyn Beem, spokeswoman for the giant Freeport outdoor retailer, said the company informed the store’s 14 employees Monday that the lease at the 542 Congress St. location would not be renewed and the store would close in September.

The Congress Street outlet store, one of 15 operated by L.L. Bean, opened in 1996. It is the closest store to the company’s  Freeport flagship operations, which include full-priced and outlet stores.

How sad that their lease is not being renewed. Probably the owners of the property are like most other landlords, "greedy" and think they will be able to obtain high rent prices in this poor economy. I hope the building is left empty so that the landlord takes a loss of revenue.
