Update: 2nd gay marriage opponent threatenedUpdated at 1:25 p.m. AUGUSTA -- Police are investigating a pair of threats against gay marriage opponents in Maine. Marc Mutty from Stand for Marriage Maine says a threatening voicemail message was discovered this morning at campaign headquarters in which a female caller said, "You will be dead. Maybe not today, not tomorrow. But soon you'll dead." Police in Yarmouth are investigating. Augusta police say a separate voicemail threat targeted Michael Heath, former leader of the Christian Civic League of Maine and its successor, the Maine Family Policy Council. Heath wasn't actively involved in the gay marriage campaign, but he fought against a gay rights law in campaigns in 1998, 2000 and 2005. The incident following voters' decision last week to scuttle Maine's gay marriage law. Mutty says the campaign is taking the threats seriously. 9:58 a.m. AUGUSTA -- Police are investigating a threat against a leader in past efforts against gay rights in Maine. Augusta police say the voicemail threat targeted Michael Heath, former leader of the Christian Civic League of Maine and its successor, the Maine Family Policy Council. The person who left the voicemail said, "I can tell him this. I'm a gay guy who owns guns, and he's my next target." The incident isn't the only backlash following voters' decision to scuttle Maine's gay marriage law. On Sunday, same-sex marriage supporters protested outside the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. WGME-TV says protesters taped their mouths shut in the silent protest. Bishop Richard Malone had urged Catholics to reject gay marriage. Bookmark/Search this post with:

Mutty and Heath are on the receiving end of their hateful rhetoric for a change. What a couple of whiny fairies. LOL
Maybe it's just the devil, calling his chosen home.
Jeff, would that be President Obama?
Nailed it, Jill.
Another case of the intolerant NO on 1 people refusing to accept the vote of the majority of Mainers opposed to homosexual marriage. NO on 1 supporters claim their rights are being denied but won't defend the right of someone wanting to vote as they see fit.
Don't let one crazy person on the edge define the whole group. You know that is wrong and I'm sure you hate it when people do that to Christians.
Who can name the speaker?
“I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."
JST, you're assuming it's true. Most of the folks on here seem to have a heavy dose of skepticism."
I have no doubt it's true. There are irrational nutcases on both sides. It really doesn't matter what folks on here think. If anyone gets a death threat, it should be taken seriously. I'm sure if it was given to someone on the NO side, everyone here would be crazy with fury.
JST, either I misread the first article today or they clarified it. When I first read it, I thought it was the one from last week, about Michael Heath. Only this evening, re-reading it, did I discover it was about Marc Mutty.
I would believe Marc Mutty. Not the Christian Civil League. They are unethical and uncredible. Marc Mutty, as much as I dislike what he's done, I don't have the sense that he would lie about something like this. The Christian Civic League would do anything for any reason. But I just don't get the same 'take' on Mutty.
The first story about Michael Heath could have triggered someone with loose control over their impulses to call Mutty. I still don't believe the Heath story, although I'm not as certain as I was when I first read it.
There is no call, no reason and no acceptable excuse for death threats. It's wrong. And there are no two sides to it. Period!

This news article is poorly done and recycled from last week. The paper just doesn't know what to do for news now that their 3 story a day topic is used up. /quote
What rehash from what article last week? I read everyday and didn't see this article last week anytime. Seems like a legitimately new story about a couple guys being left threatening voicemails.
I read all the time comments from people complaining how bad this paper is, but I have to tell you, it is one of the most balanced papers I have read. The stories are well written for the most part and reasonably balanced considering how conservative the leadership is there. Yes they run their fair share of AP stories, but honestly, most papers and other news sources run their fair share of AP stories too.
I cannot believe the intolerance from both sides of this issue.
Can’t people just simply disagree on an issue? Why all the name calling? What happened to an open debate?
Look at these postings! If I disagree with one side or the other; I’m automatically called a name, or threatened (YES, I do believe it was a real threat – given the tone in thread line).
Why can’t we start looking for some common ground?
I think Mutty is a liar and a thief. After all, he was working for the Catholic church and on their payroll and on yes on 1 too.
"Interesting...not to far removed from Nazi Germany...they prevent equal access to rights,"
This kind of dramatization is what makes folks lose their credibility. You're not helping with that kind of nonsense. This was determined by a democratic vote whether you agree with it or not.
JST, you're assuming it's true. Most of the folks on here seem to have a heavy dose of skepticism.
I think it's entirely possible this whole thing is a hoax by someone who isn't satisfied with simply winning. Some people can't enjoy a win unless their opponent has to be utterly discredited as well.
And it's gotten Mike Health's name in the paper two days now.
If I recall, a day or two ago a catholic preist compared the No On 1 supports to the KKK.
It is happening on all sides.
This is very, very reminisent of the McCain supporter who claimed she was jumped and disfigured by an Obama supporter.
Until the police found proof that she did it to herself and she confessed.
So it's ok to threaten someone who doesn't share your view? Now THAT'S tolerance! There are just as many radical gays out there as there are anti-gay. Both sides lose respect when they go way off on the deep end. Keep it civilized folks.
If this keeps up, maybe Obama will invite them to the whitehouse for a beer!
Interesting...not to far removed from Nazi Germany...they prevent equal access to rights, they then stage a reichstagg fire (the reported "threats" via the phone) and claim to be victims.Define a group that you dont like as subhuman then denegrate and belittle them, finally legislate and codify them out of existence.
Religions, Mike Heathen, and Mark Nutty have learned well from the Master Race....Religious Imperilism at its finest
It is strange to me that these incidents happened in seemingly rapid succession but are assured to be separate incidents as indicated by a definite male and then female voice as to make it seem that these occurances will become rampant.
Seems a little fishy.
So you think this is a SECOND threat? Oh wow. During the heat of the argument there was nothing. Now all of a sudden TWO people call and threaten him. Even after the first brief said he no longer works there?
I don't believe a word of it!
Michael Heath is a hater who's homophobic rhetoric help make anti-gay violence the norm. Looks like the the chickens have come home to roost.
Why juxtapose a violent threat and a group of peaceful (and silent) protestors?
That's sloppy.
I don't understand why people in Maine always talk about gay marriage. From my understanding it's a law to allow same sex people to get married. Since the law is about benefits one gets by being married rather than being single will allow millions of not gay people to get married as same sex marrage means better health benefits, better income tax benefits, etc. As far as gay marrage goes, does the State of Maine have a blood test that proves you are gay? If not then only talk about same sex marrage, that you can prove.
Anti-gay sign on a tree: Hate crime!! Find the one who did it and lock them up!!!!
Death threat against Christian: Aw who cares, it was probably a fake... yawn.
I don't understand. This was in the paper last week, why is it there again? On the day it ran, hard copy, it was placed on the last page of the Local section. Where is it today in hard copy? (not being snarky - haven't seen a paper yet). Is it more prominently displayed?
Maybe Heath didn't get enough recognition from the first one because it was buried deep in the paper?
And quite frankly, I don't equate a supposed (I don't believe that's true) death threat with people protesting in a peaceful manner.
So ya, this is a pretty bad brief, as briefs go.
Is this one of the tolerant liberals we keep hearing about? You lost an election, get over it. When the people vote, their voices are truly heard, just like in California. I am sure the same would happen in NH, VT and MA if the people had a chance to make their voices heard as well.
The voicemail could have been left by anyone, including a Yes on 1 supporter looking to stir the pot; or it could be a fabrication, the beginning of the campaign to even further eliminate gay rights, as Heath himself described.
The threat was probably NOT made by a "gay marriage" supporter, but more likely came from a Yes on 1 supporter trying to stir up trouble.
